Pulcinella Orchestra

Sunday July 27th - 9 pm / Church of Valloire

Sacred Nocturnes by Couperin and Fiocco

by Pulcinella Orchestra with Emmanuelle de Negri and Sandrine Piau, direction Ophélie Gaillard

After Venice, London and Naples, the Pulcinella Orchestra now heads for Flanders with a pick of outstanding soloists. This programme brings together some of the Caprices for solo violoncello by the brilliant, somewhat iconoclastic Joseph-Marie-Clément Dall’Abaco and the Lamentations by Joseph-Hector Fiocco, published in Brussels, in 1733.

Accompanied by the obligatory cellos, the solo voice chisels each of the Hebrew letters that introduce the verses of the text attributed to the prophet Jeremiah and explores the darkness of Holy Week with all-Italian expressiveness.

These rarities by Fiocco vie with François Couperin’s famous Leçons de ténèbres, magnified here by the voices of Sandrine Piau and Emmanuelle de Negri.

Pulcinella Orchestra

For 20 years, the Pulcinella Orchestra has gathered around Ophélie Gaillard a consort of virtuoso soloists and chamber musicians with a passion for performing on period instruments. Revisiting some of the major scores of the cello repertoire, they also endeavour to discover yet unpublished or little known works. The ensemble collaborates with the best singers of the younger generation and performs at the most prestigious venues (Théâtres du Châtelet, des Champs-Élysées, Festivals of Beaune, Radio France, Montpellier, Pontoise…).

The ensemble is also committed at local level, especially in Savoie and Greater Geneva, eager to bring classical and Baroque music to as many people as possible.

Ophélie Gaillard - Cello and artistic direction

An insatiably curious mind, a taste for risk-taking, an immoderate appetite for the entire cello concerto repertoire, with neither borders nor partisan quarrels, a commitment to citizenship and an unconditional love of nature, these are unquestionably the traits that have distinguished this brilliant Franco-Swiss performer from the start. A much sought-after teacher, she has been a professor at Geneva’s Haute École de Musique since 2014 and is regularly invited to give masterclasses and serve on the jury of major international competitions.

Emmanuelle de Negri - Soprano

From the start of her career, Emmanuelle de Negri established a close collaboration with William Christie and Les Arts Florissants, with whom she sings such works as The Fairy Queen, The Indian Queen, Dido and Aeneas, as well as many roles in French Baroque operas, including Hippolyte et Aricie, Platée, Atys, or yet again Titon et l’Aurore.

Emmanuelle de Negri also performs with French ensembles such as Les Folies Françoises, Pygmalion, Le Poème Harmonique, Le Banquet Céleste, Les Paladins, and so on.

Sandrine Piau - Soprano

A graduate of the CNSMD in Paris in harp, chamber music and the interpretation of Early vocal music, Sandrine Piau may now lay claim to a wide-ranging repertoire, confirming her exceptional position in the operatic world. She shines on the world’s greatest stages (Opéra de Paris, Salzburg Festival, Théâtre de la Monnaie Brussels, Covent Garden London…). Sandrine Piau was made Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et Lettres in 2006 and was voted “Lyric Artist of the Year” at the Victoires de la Musique awards in 2009.
