Baroque music and hip hop dance (Krump) by Toccata e Fuga

The baroque music ensemble Toccata e Fuga juggles with borders and time by bringing together on stage the music of Johann-Sebastian Bach and krumping. Born from hip-hop, this dance first appeared in the ghettos of Los Angeles. It reached France in the 2000’s, and has since become a popular phenomenon there.

The unexpected confluence of these two seemingly opposite aesthetics reveals the timelessness of Bach’s music as well as the power of krumping.

As in a krumping or chamber music session, collective energy sustains the expression of a character, played here by Manon Falgoux.

Drawing on historical and contemporary sources, the dancer and musicians of Toccata e Fuga engage in a continued dialogue to transcend stylistic boundaries.

Toccata e Fuga

A musical variable-geometry ensemble, Toccata e Fuga was born of the encounter of musicians from ensembles specialising in performance on period instruments. The team enjoys combining baroque music with other artistic disciplines in order to build bridges between various arts.

Manon Falgoux - dancer

Manon Falgoux is a dancer and choreographer. After studying contemporary dance, she continued her training in France and the United States. She is particularly interested in improvisation and the legacy of post-modern American dance. Since her discovery of krumping in 2021, she has focused her work on creating bridges between these practices, nurturing a hybrid dance form, and eventually setting up her own company “Brutasse”. She performs with Karine Vaysettes, Pierre-Benjamin Nantel, Serena Malaco, Melissa Zulberti and the Ô77 collective.

Calliopé Chaillan - harpsichord

Calliopé Chaillan began playing the harpsichord in the Provençal village of Cucuron, then went on studying at the conservatoire in Aix-en-Provence, then Paris, before joining the CNSMD in Lyon, from which she graduated in 2011. The musical friendships she has formed have led her to perform regularly in concerts across France. A holder of the Certificat d’aptitude, she has been teaching harpsichord and continuo at the CRR in Annecy since 2018, and currently coordinates the Early instruments department.

Mathilde Horcholle - traverso

With a passion for transverse flutes, Mathilde Horcholle studied traverso with Barthold Kuijken, Frank Theuns, and Marc Hantai and obtained a master’s degree from the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. She has worked with a number of chamber music ensembles (Ma Non Troppo, La Petite Symphonie…), co-founded the consort Les Renaissants and, more recently, the ensemble Toccata e Fuga. Beside these projects, she devotes her time to teaching, and is responsible for the Maurienne Galibier site of the Maurienne arts teaching establishment.

Nathan Gaillard - viola da Gamba

After studying with Emily Audouin, Nathan Gaillard went on to learn the viola da gamba in Paris with Christine Plubeau, before joining the CNSMD in Lyon in the class of Marianne Muller, then of Myriam Rignol. He performs solo or with numerous ensembles (Suonare e Cantare, Le Café Zimmermann, Les Galants Caprices, le Concert de l’Hostel Dieu) or under the direction of Sebastien Daucé or Alexis Kossenko. In 2020, he co-founded the ensemble “Du Souffle à l’Archet” with which he explores the repertoire for four violas da gamba and voice.

The educational initiatives of the Festival Valloire baroque

As part of its educational initiatives, the Festival is renewing its partnership with the Toccata e Fuga ensemble. In 2024, the circus arts had combined with baroque music to offer a unique, poetic show; this year, krump will mix with the same musical universe to sweep us into yet another aesthetic.

On the morning of Monday July 28th, some fifteen children from leisure centres in Valloire and the Maurienne Valley, as well as other possibly interested audiences, will attend urban dance and music workshops hosted by the artists from the Sacrebleu! show.

At 3pm, the artists will perform the show at the Espace Le Savoie at Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne, in “immersive mode”, meaning that the audiences who have taken part in the workshops will be “immersed” in the show. Through the workshops and the show, the project aims to develop the children’s sensitivity to music and dance, while making them aware of the possible bridges between distant artistic and cultural imaginations.

The educational initiatives of the Festival Valloire baroque are supported by Caisse d’Épargne Rhône-Alpes.

The Caisse d’Épargne Rhône-Alpes, a regional cooperative bank, is committed to the promotion of access to culture for all. As a long-time patron of the Festival Valloire baroque, it is especially supportive of a concert aimed at young audiences and residents of retirement homes in the Maurienne region.
