A Journey in 1685
by Ensemble Mirabelle, direction Ludovic Glowacz
This concert is organized in partnership with the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional in Lyon

The year 1685 saw the birth of three of the greatest musicians of the Baroque era. The dramatic power of Johann-Sebastian Bach, the extravagance deployed by Domenico Scarlatti and the hybrid, ornate style displayed by Handel all along his travels have resonated in all the salons and concert halls of Baroque Europe.
Eager to describe the musical landscape of this period, the Mirabelle ensemble offers a journey through the first half of the 18th century.
The programme is designed to illustrate in the most diverse ways the art in which the three composers excelled, namely how to stir emotion and wonder. The music for solo instrument ranges from the very intimate and transparent cello suite to the powerful, complex writing for solo harpsichord. As for the vocal repertoire, it offers two examples of the cantata, the most popular form of the period after opera. A rare gem of the repertoire, a little-known cantata by Scarlatti highlights the composer’s versatility and genius as dark narratives contrast with innocent, limpid arias. Finally, Handel’s music pays homage to fiery and blessed spirits.
Ensemble Mirabelle
Founded in 2022, Mirabelle is the brainchild of the human and musical encounter between four musicians and singers, long-standing friends, who shared a common project: to introduce a varied audience to a repertoire they hold dear, the Baroque repertoire. The ensemble offers variable-geometry formats (duo, trio and quartet) to adapt to the requisites of concerts and venues. Its members come from a variety of backgrounds: Camilo is Colombian, Phillipe is Polish, Ludovic and Marion are French. This enriching mix of cultures and the desire to promote them have led these artists to offer programmes focusing on Europe and Latin America.
During the 2023-2024 season, Mirabelle performed in the Drôme (including at the church of Saint-Michel at Clansayes, the priory in Grignan, and the Salle Henri Girard at La Garde-Adhémar), in Lorraine and in Versailles.
The ensemble is also keen to share its passion for Early music with young audiences, the reason why partnerships in the form of mediation and training courses have been set up, thanks, notably, to the Vallon des Alyssas association in the region of the Drôme Provençale.
