Cupid and Bacchus

Tuesday July 30th, 21:00 – Valloire church

Throughout the 18th century, Greek and Roman mythology is at the centre of arts in France, the main source of inspiration for painting, drama, but also opera works, or cantatas, the latest style in music composition.
Apart from Jupiter, Neptune, and other war gods, the favourite divinity of composers and librettists is Cupid, the son of Venus, often represented as a blindfolded child shooting his arrows at lovers. But a much less serious god also dwells on Mount Olympus, Bacchus, whose drunkenness has so often been set to music, in cantatas, operas and various drinking songs.
This programme combines a number of unpublished works, notably a Dido & Aeneas in a concert version by André Campra. As was customary at the time, Campra added an overture, dances, and instrumental parts to the initial score, so that the cantata eventually evolves into a miniature opera.

Ensemble Les Surprises

Formed in 2010 by Juliette Guignard, a viola da gamba player, and Louis-Noël Bestion de Camboulas, both organist and harpsichordist, Les Surprises is a variable-geometry ensemble. It borrows its name from Les Surprises de l’Amour, an opéra-ballet by Jean-Philippe Rameau, a tell-tale sign that the ensemble means to explore opera music in all of its variants!
The ensemble Les Surprises has recorded five CD’s for the label Ambronay Éditions; they all received high praise from the national and international press (Diapason, Opéra-Magazine…). Issé, a pastorale héroïque by Destouches, is expected to be released in 2019.
The ensemble appears at many European festivals and concert halls: Opéra royal de Versailles, festival d’Ambronay, festival Sinfonia en Périgord, festival de Saintes, Rencontres Musicales de Vézelay, festival baroque de Pontoise, festival Sanssouci (Potsdam – Germany), saison des Bozar (Brussels – Belgium), festival Radio France Montpellier, Saint John’s Smith Square (London – UK), and also the Beirut Chants Festival (Beirut – Lebanon)…

Eugénie Lefebvre, soprano
Following a remarkable debut, Eugénie Lefebvre furthers her musical training at the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles, then at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London.
She appears in concert with Le Concert d’Astrée (E. Haïm), Les Arts Florissants (W. Christie), Pygmalion (R. Pichon), Correspondances (S. Daucé), Concerto Soave (J-M. Aymes), La Rêveuse (B. Perrot), Les Symphonistes (O. Schneebeli), Le Poème Harmonique (V. Dumestre) and the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin.
Besides, Eugénie regularly collaborates with talented young ensembles such as L’Escadron Volant de la Reine, Le Vertigo and Les Surprises, with which she makes her first recordings as soloist.

Etienne Bazola, baritone
A chorister from a very early age, with a passion for singing, Etienne Bazola graduates from the Lyon CNSMD with a first prize in opera singing. He perfects his approach of the specific repertoires of lied, opera, oratorio and French mélodie, attending a number of master classes under François Le Roux, Christian Immler, Rosemary Joshua and Udo Reinemann
He is often hired as soloist in great French baroque ensembles such as Les Talens Lyriques, Correspondances or again Pygmalion.

At 18:00 at the Salle Gabriel Julliard: Libre cours lecture by Louis-Noël Bestion de Camboulas
